Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • dash of salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp. dark Karo syrup
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Sift dry ingredients and work in shortening with a pastry blender.
  • Add syrup and buttermilk to make a soft dough.
  • Turn out on a floured surface; flip around a few times, then flatten out into a circle about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Cut into 8 wedges (a pizza cutter works great).
  • Put on a slightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Top will be only slightly brown.
  • Recipe may be doubled to make 16 at one time.
