Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt, dissolved in water first
  • 3/4 c. water
  • 1/4 c. rum
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. dark molasses
  • 7 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice

Method

  • In large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • In small bowl, mix together salt, water and rum and set aside.
  • In another small bowl, mix together soda and molasses and set aside.
  • Sift together flour and spices.
  • Add flour mixture alternately with liquids to cream mixture, beating well after each addition.
