Ingredients
- 1 c. shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 1 Tbsp. salt, dissolved in water first
- 3/4 c. water
- 1/4 c. rum
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 c. dark molasses
- 7 c. flour
- 1 Tbsp. ginger
- 1 tsp. cloves
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. allspice
Method
- In large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
- In small bowl, mix together salt, water and rum and set aside.
- In another small bowl, mix together soda and molasses and set aside.
- Sift together flour and spices.
- Add flour mixture alternately with liquids to cream mixture, beating well after each addition.
