Ingredients

  • 1 (4 oz.) pkg. Baker's German's sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. margarine
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 1/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 4 egg whites, beaten stiff

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Melt chocolate in boiling water.
  • Cool. Cream margarine and sugar until fluffy adding egg yolks one at a time.
  • Blend in vanilla and chocolate.
  • Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with buttermilk beating smooth after each addition. Fold in egg whites.
  • Pour into greased and floured pans 3 (9-inch) layers.
  • Bake 30 to 35 minutes, 1 (9 x 13-inch) layer 35 to 40 minutes and 10-inch tube 50 to 55 minutes.
  • Test (ovens differ). Frost with French Frosting.
