Ingredients

  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 12 cup hot water
  • 1 12 cups sugar
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 12 cup butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 cup buttermilk
  • 14 cup butter, melted
  • 2 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted
  • 14 cup light cream
  • 2 cups sifted icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Generously grease 2 9 inch round layer pans.
  • Combine chocolate and hot water in the top of a double boiler and heat until chocolate melts.
  • Add 1/2 cup sugar and cook 2 minutes.
  • Allow to cool slightly.
  • Sift flour with baking soda and salt.
  • Sift 2 more times.
  • Cream butter with remaining sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.
  • Stir in vanilla, then add flour alternately with buttermilk, beating well.
  • Add chocolate mixture and beat well.
  • Pour batter into pans and bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool.
  • While cake cools, prepare frosting.
  • Mix melted butter and chocolate then add remaining ingredients and blend well.
  • Spread cake with chocolate frosting.
