Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 4 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. mace
  • 1 lb. shortening
  • 1 lb. brown sugar
  • 10 eggs, well beaten
  • 1 lb. chopped dates
  • 1 lb. raisins
  • 1 lb. currants
  • 3 lb. mixed candied fruit
  • 1/2 lb. walnuts, chopped
  • 1 c. honey
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1/2 c. orange juice

Method

  • Cream sugar and shortening.
  • Sift dry ingredients and set aside.
  • Mix liquid ingredients and add to creamed mixture, alternating with dry ingredients.
  • Add beaten eggs; mix well. Combine all chopped fruit and nuts; add to batter.
  • Mix well! Cook at 250° for 4 hours, in pans lined with brown paper, well-greased.
  • Makes a 10-pound wedding cake.
