Ingredients

  • 2 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1/4 c. butter or oleo
  • 1/2 lb. chopped dates
  • 1 c. chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts)
  • 1 c. moist coconut

Method

  • Combine sugar, milk and butter in a heavy saucepan.
  • Cook until syrup forms a soft ball in water. Add chopped dates.
  • Cook over low heat, stirring often, until candy becomes very thick. The bubbles will pop and hiss and the mixture will follow the spoon around the pan.
  • Take from fire and add nuts and coconut. Beat until mixture is like soft cookie dough and can be handled. Turn out on a cloth which has been dipped in cold water. Roll to form a 1 1/2-inch cylinder.
  • Keep refrigerated until ready to use.
