- 2/3 c. shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. cocoa
- 2 eggs, at room temperature
- 2 c. cake flour, sifted
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 heaping tsp. baking powder
- 2/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. boiling water
Method
- Cream shortening (1/3 cup margarine and 1/3 cup Crisco).
- Add sugar and blend well, then add cocoa and blend well.
- Then add eggs and blend well.
- Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. (To sour the milk, add 2 teaspoons vinegar to plain milk.)
- Mix the milk (room temperature) and baking soda together well. Alternating between the milk and the flour mixture, add to the sugar, cocoa, egg and shortening mixture.
- Then add the vanilla and boiling water.
- Line the pans with wax paper and bake at 350° about 30 minutes.
