Ingredients

  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. cocoa
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 c. cake flour, sifted
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 heaping tsp. baking powder
  • 2/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. boiling water

Method

  • Cream shortening (1/3 cup margarine and 1/3 cup Crisco).
  • Add sugar and blend well, then add cocoa and blend well.
  • Then add eggs and blend well.
  • Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. (To sour the milk, add 2 teaspoons vinegar to plain milk.)
  • Mix the milk (room temperature) and baking soda together well. Alternating between the milk and the flour mixture, add to the sugar, cocoa, egg and shortening mixture.
  • Then add the vanilla and boiling water.
  • Line the pans with wax paper and bake at 350° about 30 minutes.
