Ingredients

  • 6 -8 cups flour, divided
  • 34 cup flour
  • 2 (4 1/2 teaspoon) envelopes dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • water
  • 14 teaspoon finely crumbled saffron
  • 23 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • poppy seed

Method

  • combine 1/4 cup flour,suger,yeast and salt.
  • Bring 21/2 c water with the saffron in it to a boil.
  • then let stand until lukewarm.
  • Stir the water along with the oil into the flour mixture.
  • At high speed beat for 3 minutes.
  • Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition.
  • Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough (about 4C).
  • Knead by hand until smooth.
  • Place dough in a lightlty greased bowl.
  • Let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch down Turn out onto lightly floured board.
  • Divide into 3 equal parts, divide each again into 3 parts.
  • roll each into a one inch rope.
  • Braid 3 ropes into a bread.
  • Place on lighlty greased cookie sheet and cover with damp towel.
  • Let rise 1 hour.
  • Bake 350 45 minutes.
