Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Method

  • In large heavy skillet, heat sugar over very low heat.
  • Stir constantly until melted and light golden brown.
  • Remove from heat. Gradually stir in 1 cup hot water; bring to boiling point. Reduce heat and simmer until mixture thickens slightly or reaches 228° on candy thermometer.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Add butter, salt and vanilla.
  • Let cool.
  • Serve as a dressing over dessert.
