Ingredients

  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 5 Tbsp. chilled solid shortening
  • 1 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Preheat oven to 425°. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Cut the shortening into the flour until coarse crumbs form. Add the buttermilk, tossing with a fork until a dough forms. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead lightly a few times, just until smooth. Pat dough to 3/4 inch thick. Cut out biscuits with a biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes.
