Ingredients

  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1/2 c. corn syrup
  • 1/2 c. water
  • pinch salt
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. nuts, if desired

Method

  • Put first 5 ingredients in heavy pan.
  • Stir until sugars dissolve.
  • Cook without stirring to 265° on candy thermometer, or to hard ball stage.
  • Beat egg whites until stiff.
  • Slowly beat in the syrup.
  • When mixture begins to thicken, add vanilla.
  • Continue beating until it holds its shape.
  • Drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper.
  • Store in airtight container.
