Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening or butter
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 pt. blackberry jam or preserves

Method

  • Cream shortening, sugar and
  • eggs.
  • Add soda to buttermilk. Add
  • sifted
  • dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture.
  • Mix in jam.
  • Pour into three 8-inch layer pans.
  • Bake at 325° about 25 minutes.
