Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. lemon flavored gelatin
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 c. shoestring cut beets
  • 2/3 c. finely minced onion
  • 2 Tbsp. prepared horseradish
  • up to 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 medium head cabbage, shredded
  • 1 medium onion, sliced thin
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. salad oil (originally made without, but this improves it)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 tsp. celery seed
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 c. vinegar

Method

  • Layer cabbage and onion in bowl; pour 3/4 cup sugar over.
  • Do not mix!
  • Combine oil, vinegar, salt, dry mustard, celery seed and sugar in saucepan.
  • Let come to a boil.
  • Pour hot dressing over cabbage and onion.
  • Do not mix!
  • Let set in refrigerator for at least 3 hours or overnight.
  • (Years ago you set it on the cellar floor.)
  • Mix before serving.
