Ingredients

  • 2 lb. ground beef
  • 2 c. bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 c. onion, chopped
  • 2 lb. frozen Southern-style hash browns, thawed
  • 16 oz. tomato sauce
  • 1 c. water
  • 6 oz. tomato paste
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 1/2 lb. Velveeta, thinly sliced

Method

  • Cook beef until browned; drain fat.
  • Add pepper and onions. Cook until tender.
  • Stir in everything else except cheese.
  • Spoon half of the meat mixture into a 13 x 9-inch pan.
  • Top with half of the cheese.
  • Spoon remaining meat mixture over cheese.
  • Cover and bake at 350° for 45 minutes.
  • Top with remaining cheese.
  • Let stand loosely covered until cheese melts.
  • Serves 8 to 10.
