Ingredients

  • 12 cup all-purpose flour
  • 14 cup sugar
  • 14 cup light brown sugar
  • 34 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 14 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 18 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 13 cup old fashioned oats
  • 14 cup chopped walnuts or 14 cup pecans
  • 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries (optional) or 1 cup raspberries (optional)
  • 1 lemon, zest of
  • 14 cup light brown sugar

Method

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  • Grease an 8 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish.
  • Set aside.
  • For Topping: Place all the topping ingredients in a food processor and process until the mixture is crumbly and there are no large pieces of butter visible.
  • Set aside while you prepare the filling.
  • Place apples in a large bowl, along with the berries and lemon zest (if using), and add the brown sugar.
  • Gently combine and then transfer to your prepared baking dish spread the topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake for approximately 35-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool for about 30 minutes before serving.
  • Serve with softly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
