Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour
  • 3/4 c. vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/2 c. lukewarm water
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Sift together dry ingredients.
  • Cut in shortening thoroughly. Add buttermilk and yeast, dissolved in water.
  • Mix with spoon until all flour is moistened.
  • Roll out onto floured surface to 1/2 to 3/4-inch thickness.
  • Cut biscuits.
  • Bake at 400° on cookie sheet for 12 minutes.
  • This dough will keep several weeks in the refrigerator.
