Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 1/3 c. flour, sifted
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 3/4 c. canned applesauce

Method

  • Cream shortening, sugar and egg together well.
  • Sift flour with soda, salt and spices.
  • Blend into creamed mixture alternately with applesauce.
  • Stir in walnuts.
  • Turn into greased 9 inch square baking pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes, just until cake tests done.
  • Remove from oven and spread with butterscotch topping at once.
