Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 c. red food coloring
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Method

  • Sift flour, salt and cocoa.
  • Add eggs and red food coloring. Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk.
  • Beat until smooth.
  • Add vanilla.
  • Mix baking soda with vinegar and fold into batter.
  • Pour into 2 (9-inch) pans and bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until center springs back to the touch.
  • Split layers when cool and ice with creamy frosting.
