Ingredients

  • 12 Tbsp. (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 2/3 c. flour
  • 1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder plus 2 Tbsp. (for icing)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. confectioners sugar
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • red food coloring (optional)

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Using an electric mixer, beat butter until fluffy.
  • Scrape bowl as needed.
  • Add granulated sugar and beat until combined.
  • Beat in egg yolk, vanilla and then flour, 1/3 cup cocoa powder and salt.
  • Scrape dough onto a piece of waxed paper; pat into a disc and cover with another piece of waxed paper.
  • Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick.
  • Using a 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cutter, cut out cookies; place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake until tops are firm and cookies are set around the edges, about 15 minutes.
  • Let cool 5 minutes, then transfer the cookies to racks to cool completely.
