Ingredients

  • 4 pears ripe
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup butter melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup condensed milk

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F/180 degrees C. Butter a 1.5 litre oven proof dish generously.
  • Core and cut the pears into 8 sections lengthwise and arrange on the dish.
  • Sift the flour, salt and baking powder.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Combine the milk and vanilla and add alternately with the sifted dry ingredients, blending well after each addition.
  • Pour over the pears in the baking dish.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes (or until cake tester comes out clean).
  • Make the toffee sauce by combining the brown sugar, condensed milk and 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan.
