Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 sq. unsweetened chocolate or 2 1/2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. sugar (more if using cocoa)
  • 1 scant c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Method

  • In bowl, cream sugar and margarine.
  • Melt chocolate in boiling water.
  • Pour over first mixture and stir.
  • Add flour, soda, salt, egg, buttermilk and vanilla.
  • Stir all together well.
  • Bake in greased and floured 8 or 9-inch square pan at 350° for 20 minutes.
