Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 c. strawberry preserves
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. walnuts, chopped

Method

  • Set oven at 350°.
  • Beat together shortening, sugar and egg yolks.
  • Add flour; stir until blended.
  • Spread mixture into bottom of ungreased 13 x 9-inch pan.
  • Bake for 12 minutes.
  • Remove from oven.
  • Spread evenly with preserves.
  • Beat egg whites; beat in sugar gradually.
  • Fold in nutmeats.
  • Spread meringue carefully over preserves.
  • Bake for 25 minutes.
  • Cool.
  • Cut into bars. Makes 18 bars.
