Ingredients

  • 1/2 (2 lb.) bag plain flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. (scant) sugar
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 3/4 pt. jar warm water
  • lump of shortening (size of big egg)

Method

  • Use half of 2 pound bag of flour.
  • Sift flour with salt and sugar.
  • Dissolve yeast in warm water, filling 3/4 of a pint jar. Stir until dissolved.
  • Add to flour mixture.
  • Put in lump of shortening and work up like biscuits.
  • Turn out on floured board. Knead until not sticky.
  • Let rise in warm place until doubled in size (about 1 1/2 hours).
  • Roll out rolls.
  • Let rise again.
  • Bake at 400° until brown.
