Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted enriched flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 c melted shortening
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar for topping

Method

  • Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt and nutmeg. Beat egg and add sugar.
  • Stir well.
  • Add buttermilk and shortening. Add to flour mixture, stirring only until flour is moistened.
  • Fill greased muffin pans 1/2 full.
  • Brush tops of muffins with milk and sprinkle with brown sugar.
  • Bake at 425° for 20 to 25 minutes.
