Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 c. cocoa
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. hot water

Method

  • Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and cocoa.
  • Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; add vinegar to milk and add to the creamed mixture alternately with the dry ingredients.
  • Add vanilla and hot water.
  • Makes two (9-inch) layers or 1 large sheet cake.
  • Bake 30 minutes at 350°.
