Ingredients

  • 1 large orange
  • 6 cloves
  • 1/2 to 1 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1 bottle dry red wine (750 ml)

Method

  • Stud the orange with the cloves and bake it in a 350° oven until the skin has browned, about 40 minutes.
  • Cut the orange in quarters and place in a heavy saucepan with the sugar and water. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar, then reduce the heat and simmer, covered, about 20 minutes.
  • Add the wine and heat until the mixture is "smoking" hot.
  • Pour into a heated punch bowl and serve.
