Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 3/4 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. buttered bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Method

  • Place potatoes into heavy saucepan with water and salt.
  • Cover tightly and bring to a boil.
  • Cook for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, melt butter in heavy saucepan.
  • Stir in flour.
  • Gradually add milk.
  • Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • Cook until thickened.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Stir in cheese, salt and garlic. Fold sauce into potatoes.
  • Turn into 1 1/2-quart buttered baking dish.
  • Top with buttered crumbs.
  • Bake at 375° for 45 minutes or until mixture is bubbly and top is slightly brown.
