Ingredients

  • 8 cups white bread, cubed
  • 1 lb. sausage meat
  • 1 lg. onion, diced
  • 2 lg. apples, pared, quartered, cored and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp. salt

Method

  • Spread bread cubes on large cookie sheets; place in oven at 250F for 10 minutes, remove from oven; reserve.
  • 2.
  • Cut sausage into thick slices.
  • Brown 5 minutes on each side in a medium-size skillet, then break into small pieces.
  • Cook 1 minute longer or until no trace of pink remains.
  • Combine with bread cubes in a large bowl.
  • 3.
  • Pour off drippings from skillet.
  • Measure; return 2 tablespoons.
  • Add onions, and saute until tender.
  • Stir in water and apples, heat to boiling.
  • Pour over sausage mixture, add salt.
  • Toss lightly until evenly moist.
