Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 1/4 c. lard
  • 2 tsp. caraway seed
  • 2 tsp. anise seed
  • 1/4 c. molasses
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 c. hot water
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted rye flour
  • 3 1/2 c. white flour

Method

  • Combine yeast and warm water; set aside.
  • Combine next 6 ingredients and then add hot water; cool to lukewarm.
  • Mix in rye flour.
  • Add yeast mixture.
  • Add white flour.
  • Knead dough 10 minutes.
  • Let rise until double.
  • Punch and let rise again.
  • Form into 2 loaves and place in greased loaf pans.
  • Let rise.
  • Bake in a 375° oven for 25 to 35 minutes.
