Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. Crisco shortening
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp. butter flavoring

Method

  • Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.
  • Make a paste of the cocoa and coloring.
  • Sift the dry ingredients; add to the creamed mixture and cocoa; mix alternately with milk.
  • Add vanilla, soda and vinegar last.
  • Pour into two greased and floured cake pans and bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
