Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Method

  • Cream the shortening with the sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Make a paste of the cocoa and food coloring.
  • Add to creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt twice.
  • Add buttermilk alternately with flour to creamed mixture. Add vanilla.
  • Put vinegar in deep bowl.
  • Add soda (it will foam).
  • When blended, add to creamed cake batter.
  • Do not beat batter, just blend well. Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  • Pour batter into pans and bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.
