Ingredients
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 oz. red food coloring
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/4 c. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 eggs
- 1 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Method
- Cream the shortening with the sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Make a paste of the cocoa and food coloring.
- Add to creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt twice.
- Add buttermilk alternately with flour to creamed mixture. Add vanilla.
- Put vinegar in deep bowl.
- Add soda (it will foam).
- When blended, add to creamed cake batter.
- Do not beat batter, just blend well. Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
- Pour batter into pans and bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.
