Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. plain flour
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp. white vinegar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Method

  • Grease and flour desired pan.
  • Cream Crisco and sugar.
  • Add eggs, food coloring and vanilla.
  • Beat well.
  • Add sifted dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk.
  • Mix well after each addition.
  • Beat until smooth.
  • Fold in, do not beat, vinegar and baking soda.
  • Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes, until toothpick in center come out clean.
  • Makes a double layer 9-inch cake or 13 x 9 x 2-inch cake.
