Ingredients

  • 1 c. (2 sticks) margarine or butter, softened
  • 1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
  • 3 c. Quaker oats (Quick and Old Fashioned), uncooked
  • 1 c. Sun-Maid raisins
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. dark molasses
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour*
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 3/4 tsp. ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp. allspice
  • raisins
  • candied cherries or red gumdrops
  • citron
  • string licorice
  • decorators' icing

Method

  • Cream shortening and sugar.
  • Blend in molasses, water, flour, salt, soda, ginger, nutmeg and allspice.
  • Cover and chill 2 to 3 hours.
