Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. honey
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1 egg
  • 4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 3/4 tsp. cardamon
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. finely crushed anise seed
  • Honey Glaze (recipe follows)

Method

  • Heat honey into a 4-quart saucepan until thin and hot (do not boil).
  • Stir in butter; cool to lukewarm.
  • Beat egg into honey mixture.
  • Sift flour with salt, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, allspice, cardamon and pepper.
  • Blend in crushed anise seed.
  • Stir into honey mixture.
  • (Dough will be sticky.) Refrigerate 30 minutes to 1 hour or until dough is easy to handle. Shape into 3/4-inch balls.
  • Put on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350° for 13 to 15 minutes.
  • Cool on a rack.
