Ingredients

  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. oats
  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/3 c. warm water
  • 6 c. flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. honey or molasses
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine or butter

Method

  • Combine boiling water and oats.
  • Let stand 30 minutes.
  • Mix yeast and warm water and let stand 5 minutes.
  • Mix oats, yeast, salt, honey, butter and about 4 cups of the flour in a very large bowl.
  • Knead in remaining 2 cups flour.
  • (It will be hard work.) Let rise until doubled, 2 to 3 hours.
  • Punch down dough.
  • Divide in half and stretch each portion to cover bottoms of 2 greased loaf pans.
  • Let double again, 1 to 2 hours.
  • Bake at 325° for about 50 minutes.
  • (Is faster to use RapidRise yeast.)
