Ingredients

  • 12 c. flour
  • 2 c. milk
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 2/3 c. water
  • 3 tsp. salt
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast

Method

  • Scald together milk, sugar and shortening.
  • Remove from heat. Add 2 cups water and salt.
  • Let cool slightly.
  • Mix 1 package yeast with 2/3 cup warm milk mixture and yeast mixture.
  • Stir together and add remaining flour, 2 cups at a time.
  • Knead dough to a smooth consistency.
  • Let rise to double size.
  • Punch down and rise again. Work into rolls or loaves and place in greased pan.
  • Bake 1/2 hour at 400° and 1/2 hour at 350°.
  • Makes one 9 x 13-inch pan plus 1 loaf.
