Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. soft shortening (half butter)
  • 1 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c. molasses (dark)
  • 2 1/4 c. Gold Medal flour
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ginger

Method

  • Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses thoroughly.
  • Measure flour by dip-level-pour method.
  • Mix all dry ingredients.
  • Blend with wet mixture.
  • Chill dough.
  • Roll dough into balls the size of walnuts.
  • Dip tops in sugar.
  • Place sugar sides up 3 inches apart on greased baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle each with 2 or 3 drops of water.
  • Bake 10 minutes in ???° oven.
