Ingredients

  • 3 c. flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/4 to 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 c. sweet milk

Method

  • Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar. Cut shortening into flour mixture with pastry blender.
  • Stir in sugar.
  • Mix together egg and milk; add to other ingredients and stir to form a sticky dough.
  • Turn onto floured surface and knead 6 to 8 times.
  • Roll or pat dough to 1/2-inch thick; cut out biscuits with floured cutter.
  • Bake at 475° for 12 to 15 minutes on ungreased sheet.
  • Makes about 15 biscuits.
