Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 2 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 1 1/2 c. ground black walnuts

Method

  • Sift flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Cream shortening with sugar and vanilla until fluffy.
  • Add beaten egg yolks and beat thoroughly.
  • Add sifted dry ingredients and milk alternately in small amounts to sugar-egg mixture, beating well after each addition.
  • Add nuts.
  • Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  • Pour into greased 9-inch cake pans.
  • Bake in preheated 350° oven for 30 minutes.
  • Makes two 9-inch layers.
