Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground pork*
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 celery ribs, diced
  • 2 small carrots, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 (8-ounce) package sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can beef broth
  • 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can tomato puree
  • 1 (6-ounce) can Italian-style tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
  • 1 (20-ounce) package refrigerated cheese-filled ravioli, cooked
  • Garnish: chopped fresh basil

Method

  • Cook first 8 ingredients in a large Dutch oven over medium heat, stirring until meat crumbles and is no longer pink; drain.
  • Stir in mushrooms and next 6 ingredients; simmer 3 hours. Stir in 1 tablespoon basil just before serving; serve over ravioli. Garnish, if desired.
  • * 1 pound ground beef may be substituted.
