Ingredients

  • 4 c. unbleached flour
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. caraway seed (optional)
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 egg (at room temperature)
  • 2 Tbsp. liquid shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. (estimated) buttermilk (at room temperature)

Method

  • Preheat oven to 375°.
  • Put dry ingredients in mixing bowl and stir.
  • Add raisins and stir.
  • Add egg and shortening and stir. Gradually add buttermilk until you have a firm, but not stiff, dough (like a biscuit dough).
  • Put on a lightly floured board and knead for about 2 minutes until dough becomes smooth.
