Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 2 eggs, well beaten

Method

  • Sift together flour, soda, spices and salt.
  • Set aside.
  • Cream sugar with shortening and molasses until well blended.
  • Add sifted dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with boiling water, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  • Stir in eggs.
  • Pour into a well-greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  • Bake in a moderate 350° oven for 30 minutes or until center springs back.
