Ingredients

  • 3 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 egg, beaten well
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 c. sifted cake flour (or 1 3/4 c. regular flour)
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. milk

Method

  • Combine chocolate, 1/2 cup milk, well-beaten egg and 2/3 cup sugar in saucepan.
  • Cook over low heat until thick, stirring constantly.
  • Cool.
  • Thoroughly cream shortening, 1 cup sugar and vanilla.
  • Beat in 2 eggs, one at a time.
  • Sift flour, soda and salt together; add to creamed ingredients alternately with 2/3 cup milk.
  • Blend in chocolate mixture and pour into two 9-inch pans. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.
  • When cool, frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.
