Ingredients

  • 2 2/3 c. sifted cake flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 3 sq. Baker's unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp. red food coloring

Method

  • Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and soda.
  • Stir shortening until soft.
  • Add flour mixture and 1 cup milk.
  • Mix to dampen flour.
  • Beat 2 minutes at medium speed of mixer or 300 strokes by hand.
  • Add remaining milk, eggs, chocolate and food coloring.
  • Beat 1 minute longer.
  • Bake at 350° in 3 (8-inch) pans for 30 to 35 minutes.
