Ingredients

  • 5 slices bread, toasted (French or homemade is best)
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. milk
  • 3 Tbsp. butter, cut in small pieces
  • nutmeg

Method

  • Tear bread in pieces and place in buttered shallow casserole. Mix together the eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla and milk; pour over bread.
  • Dot with butter and sprinkle with nutmeg.
  • Bake in pan of water at 400° for 10 minutes, then at 350° for 20 minutes or until puffed and brown.
