Ingredients

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • 2 thick slices wholemeal (whole-wheat) bread
  • unsalted butter or oil, for frying
  • pinch of cinnamon (optional)
  • dried apricots, raisins and strips of orange zest, to decorate
  • maple syrup, to serve (optional)

Method

1. Beat the egg with the milk in a bowl.

2. Cut the bread into the shape of a cat face by trimming away the lower corners of the slice to make a rounded chin and cheeks. Shape the top edge into a rounded head with two pointed ears.

3. Dip the bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides.

4. Heat the butter or oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook until golden on both sides. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

5. Add halved dried apricots for eyes, a raisin for the nose and a thin strip of orange zest for the mouth.
