Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or oleo, softened
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
  • 2 1/2 c. flour

Method

  • Heat oven to 375°.
  • Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, sugar, egg and flavorings.
  • Blend in flour and salt.
  • Divide dough in half.
  • Blend food color in 1/2 of dough.
  • Shape a teaspoon of dough from each half into 4-inch rope-like dough.
  • Roll them on lightly floured board.
  • Place ropes side by side; press together lightly and begin twisting.
  • Complete each candy cane cookie, one at a time.
  • Place on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Curve top of cookie to form the handle of the cane.
  • This is fun to do with children for the holidays.
