Ingredients
- 1/2 c. butter or oleo, softened
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 2 1/2 c. flour
Method
- Heat oven to 375°.
- Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, sugar, egg and flavorings.
- Blend in flour and salt.
- Divide dough in half.
- Blend food color in 1/2 of dough.
- Shape a teaspoon of dough from each half into 4-inch rope-like dough.
- Roll them on lightly floured board.
- Place ropes side by side; press together lightly and begin twisting.
- Complete each candy cane cookie, one at a time.
- Place on ungreased baking sheet.
- Curve top of cookie to form the handle of the cane.
- This is fun to do with children for the holidays.
