Ingredients
- 3/4 c. butter or margarine
- 3/4 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp. almond extract
- 2 c. flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
Method
- Cream butter and sugar; beat in egg, extract, salt and baking powder.
- Stir in flour.
- Divide dough in half.
- Add food coloring to one half.
- Cover and chill 30 minutes.
- Pinch off chunks of each color dough and roll into 5-inch ropes.
- Pinch a red rope and a white rope together; twist and shape into a candy cane.
- Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375° for 10 or more minutes, depending on thickness.
- Don't let them brown.
- Makes 20 to 30 minutes.
