Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. butter or margarine
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp. almond extract
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. red food coloring

Method

  • Cream butter and sugar; beat in egg, extract, salt and baking powder.
  • Stir in flour.
  • Divide dough in half.
  • Add food coloring to one half.
  • Cover and chill 30 minutes.
  • Pinch off chunks of each color dough and roll into 5-inch ropes.
  • Pinch a red rope and a white rope together; twist and shape into a candy cane.
  • Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 375° for 10 or more minutes, depending on thickness.
  • Don't let them brown.
  • Makes 20 to 30 minutes.
