Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water (105~ to 115~)
  • 1 c. milk, scalded
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 1/2 to 5 c. all-purpose flour, divided
  • Herb Butter (recipe follows)

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl; let stand 5 minutes.
  • Combine milk, sugar, shortening and salt in a saucepan. Place over low heat, stirring until shortening melts.
  • Cool to 105° to 115°.
  • Stir into yeast mixture.
  • Add eggs and 1 cup flour, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
  • Gradually stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
