Ingredients

  • 9 slices white bread
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tall can evaporated milk
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/3 c. butter, melted
  • 4 egg whites
  • raisins or pecans

Method

  • Break bread into a baking dish in small pieces.
  • In bowl mix 1 cup sugar, milk, vanilla, egg yolks and butter and pour over bread in 10 x 8 x 2-inch dish.
  • Bake in preheated oven at 450° for 15 minutes.
  • Remove and make meringue.
  • Beat egg whites with 1/4 cup sugar until stiff.
  • Cover pudding with meringue and rebake for 2 to 4 minutes, until meringue is golden brown.
  • Serves 12.
